In view of this, the museum opens its doors to the public free of charge. There will be scheduled tours every hour from 9 AM to 5PM. Museum staff and interns will guide you around the exhibitions.
From 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, visitors will be treated with wonderful music as we welcome performances by Ateneo's Blue Symphony and the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY). Listen to contemporary songs being played in classical renditions.
On view are the last two exhibitions of the Lopez Museum and Library before we officially close our Public Programs Calendar for the year: PROPAGANDA and BenCab's FRAMES OF REFERENCE.
The Ateneo Blue Symphony Orchestra’s journey began with four individuals passionate about music, prompted by the question, “Why isn’t there an orchestra in the Ateneo?” Its first auditions were held in August 2008, at a waiting shed. Since then, the orchestra has done numerous concerts, exhibiting a variety of genres from classical music to pop, all written, arranged, and transcribed by its pool of student composers and arrangers. Today, the organization has grown into 150 members, doing performances inside and outside the university, conquering venues as large as Irwin Theater, and accomplishing a feat when the Council of Organizations of the Ateneo accredited the group in March 2012, after only a one year application-period.
The Ateneo Blue Symphony Orchestra has the privilege of training under the tutelage of Maestro Rodel Noreli E. Lorenzo of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra since October 2009, who formally became the organization’s musical director and conductor in August 2012, aiding him are assistant conductors, Albert Magcalas, Jr. and Guido Sarreal.
The Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) is also part of the musical line-up. Enriching the art experience, soloists from the OFY will also be playing at different time slots during the day. What a treat indeed!
Inspired by the global phenomenon known as El Sistema, created by the visionary & pianist Jose Antonio Abreu, ANG MISYON established the ORCHESTRA OF THE FILIPINO YOUTH comprised of fifty young musicians from underprivileged families, handpicked from various ensembles that already exist, and are spread throughout the Philippines. So far, these children hail from the outskirts of & within Metro Manila such as Angono, Antipolo, Cainta, Cardona, Las Piñas, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Makati, Manila, Morong, Pasig, Quezon City, Santolan, Taytay, and provinces such as Aurora, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Cebu, & Samar.
Since 2012, OFY was led by its young resident conductor Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng who was a summa cum laude from the University of the Philippines College of Music, reaped a Master of Music degree from Yale University, and acquired a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Michigan. Beginning September 2013, Olivier Ochanine – the current music director of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra – will take on the OFY podium as Interim Resident Conductor.
The OFY has performed at the Eugenio Lopez Center, The Rockwell Tent, Rockwell Powerplant, Benpres Building, Dusit Thani Hotel, EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, Holiday Inn in Clark, White Cross Orphanage, Metropolitan Museum, Museo Pambata, San Agustin Church, Philippine International Convention Center, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and in various private residences & events.
