Artist Talk with filmmaker Alvin Yapan on 28 February, 2 to 4 pm

Lopez Museum and Library brings you an afternoon with filmmaker Alvin Yapan as he talks about his art practice and his short film Ulang Palay this February 28, Saturday, 2015, 2 – 4PM. In addition, he will give us a preview of his new film, the first ten minutes of Ang Kubo sa Kawayanan (The House by the Bamboo Grove).

Ulang Palay is a short film created by Yapan that speaks of the rice cartels in the Philippines. An almost meditative video of seemingly endless rain of rice, the bounty is looked at in relation to rice growing in the Philippines and its relation to the power structures in place. Ulang Palay is part of the first major exhibition of the Lopez Museum and Library.

A multi-awarded writer and filmmaker, Alvin Yapan is the creative genius behind the critically-acclaimed films, Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe (Golden Award for Digital Films, 33rd Cairo International Film Festival; Ani ng Dangal Award, Office of the President of the Philippines), Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa (Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, 35th Gaward Urian Awards; Bronze Award, 28th Festival de Cine de Bogota), Rolyo (Best Short Film, 3rd Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival), and Debosyon. His literary works won in the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (1997, 2002, 2003).

Through the activation of an integral segment of the Lopez Museum and Library’s collection, the World War II propaganda and election-related archival materials, Propaganda fleshes out the idea of myth-making and its ability to inspire change in society, and conversely, the formation of a fantasy or outright fallacy packaged as a promise that never gets fulfilled. It brings together works of featured artists Nunelucio Alvarado, Santiago Bose, Joey Cobcobo, Don Salubayba and Alvin Yapan along with a selection from the museum and library’s collection such as works of Juan Luna, Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, National artists Napoleon Abueva, Fernando Amorsolo, Jose Joya, Cesar Legaspi, Vicente Manansala and J. Elizalde Navarro. Propaganda runs until May 30, 2015.

Registration fee for the lecture is Php 135.00 (students Php 115.00) and includes admission and a guided tour of the exhibitions. Gourmet Farms Inc. will also serve freshly brewed coffee during the lecture.
